The year I discovered Sagmeister

Siri Melchior

Some fantastic illustrations and animations that appear throughout and define the look of the CBBC children’s show Show Me, Show Me. The show itself is fabulous and the illustrative style is brilliantly light, emotive and engaging.

Having done a little research – the illustrations/animations (for Show Me, Show Me) were created when Siri was at Trunk (animation company) which she co-founded. Now at her new venture since 2013 (which she co-founded with Marie Bro) working at (the award winning) Ladybird Films.

Credits: Trunk: Director Siri Melchior; Animators Rebecca Manley and Chris Wright

And from Ladybird films: Rita and Crocodile

all in for #mygirls – adidas

adidas’ all in for campaign has been around for quite some time (2013) – spotted this on youtube a while back – and I think it absolutely nails a sense of ‘real’. I don’t want to compare this to the This Girl Can campaign (previous post) too much, yes there is similarity of subject (female + fitness), yes there is a similarity of colour grade, yes there is a similarity of filming technique, yes there is a similarity of using upbeat music, yes there is a similarity of profiling personal stories, yes there is a similarity of being positive and inspiring…you know just sayin’. I am sure Daisy Steiner would have a couple of words to say!

This Girl Can – Sport England

This Girl Can – new campaign for Sport England – all in all a positive message – plenty written about it on their website and other (design) blogs (FastC0, IndyVoices) etc…

The creative itself looks good – although more of that on my next post-but more interesting to me is the level of production (check the behind the scene film below) and an extensive list of various agencies, directors and production teams…

The Trews – Russell Brand

Russell Brand’s YouTube channel – the Trews – is all about Revolution! Have been aware of this channel via links on twitter for a while but I have never actually checked it out…definitely worth a look. Really interesting ideas, concepts, projects, commentary on the media that are contained within the (current) 220 episodes.

Episode 214 ‘The Trews vs the Sainsbury’s xmas advert’  goes to the crux of Sagmeister’s comment in his book, now paraphrasing as I don’t have it to hand – can design really touch people? And this advert does, although as Russell Brand questions – to what end?

Hort @ KK Outlet

I have come across Hort’s work, specifically the Nike promotion ‘Witness’ with Lebron James. Basically an agency that really looks like that they still enjoy their work even though they are celebrating being 20 years old – reminds me of the energy of the work of Neasden Control Centre.

So it is great to see they have a free exhibition at the KK Outlet – (KesselsKramer) – found via the always on the money: It’s Nice That.

Exhibition Runs: 12 – 27 September over in Hoxton Square, N1

Film 4 – ManvsMachine

From what I read on It’s Nice That – these are the new Film 4 idents created by ManvsMachine (this link has loads more words and design) and 4Creative. Also check out their (MvsM) Vimeo channel.

“ManvsMachine set out to create a film channel rather than a tv channel, covering all on-air aspects of the brand from idents to OSP and beyond. A custom motion technique, a contemporary take on a classic film strip / projector effect, was developed to span graphic and live-action elements to give the package a visual signature beyond the logo.”

Looks like a dream project – so much reference and source material to play with – seen together on the following shorts, it looks a really strong creative execution – can’t wait to see it live.

London Live

A promo film from London Live (they run a slightly edited version of this on their channel) is fab…

Looks simple (although the selection process could have taken a while), excellent music choice combined with existing footage, really nails what the London Live (read: the Wake Up London team – Gavin + Mark + Vanessa) team is about – friendly, London and summer…!

(edit: stumbled across the track used via 6 music – The Heat by Jungle…)

Second Chance – Leo Burnett

Second Chance film aimed at employers and just asking that question of would you give an offender a second chance? Created by Leo Burnett UK for Business in the Community – a UK charity (I have to say never heard of..). From Leo Burnett’s own website – “the first ad ever to subvert the ‘Skip Ad’ function”.

ExFEARiential – St John’s

St John’s ExFEARiential Marketing film – from what I can gather a self-promotion piece by this Toronto based agency. Taking Experiential Marketing to the next level. (They also have an interesting blog as well.) Future website to look through at their work and what they have to say in more detail.

A really simple well executed idea. Great copy, acting, direction – when these things are done right it looks so effortless.

Seen via the D&AD In Book Nominations (currently there is no additional information – in terms of brief or which agency has done the work, but a nice email from Dan at D&AD tells me it is part of the development plan for their site – watch this space!!).
