Robert Clayton

As a break to UX based posts – here is some work from Robert Clayton (via i-D magazine) – photographs from 1991 of the Lion Farm estate. Nice article by Nathalie Olah  (on their site) to support these photographs. A book of this work Estate: Robert Clayton with essays from Jonathan Meades (surely worth the price alone for his writing!) and Laura Noble. untitled-article-1432827592 untitled-article-1432827592-body-image-1432830800 estate-post-industrial-ruin-at-the-end-of-thatchers-britain-body-image-1432904005

The Go! Team – The Scene Between

So they are back – The Go! Team – a new album out March 23 – been a while… only they can define their sounds as ‘orange tone oscillations…etch a sketch jackknife…a teleprompter for your dreams…’ and it not seem a little over the top! Something for the Monday blues…!

Unité – Assassin’s Creed – Ubisoft

Quite simply looks awesome – another city recreated as the backdrop to this franchise.

Absolutely love the attention to detail and painstaking build of this game.

Printout – Designing difference

First time that I have made it to a Printout event. What a great hour / hour and an half – organised and hosted by Jeremy Leslie (MagCulture) and Steve Watson (Stack). 3 interesting magazines given a showcase by their designers – (Winter / A magazine for all seasons, Talc and mono-cultur). Printout events (I think) focus just on magazines but any designer or non-designer, in any field, (basically everyone) for that matter should check these events out. Just £6.

My preference in terms of subject and design would be Winter (designed/created by Ana Lessing and Kevin Braddock) and mono-cultur (designed/created by Kai van Rabenau). Certainly will be making a trip to Magma (if they stock them) to get myself a copy.

Some poor questions from the audience (either too long winded/self-important or just plain drunk!) – ended the night – questions that I have thought of since – how far from the initial designs, layout is the finished product?, who is the audience for these magazines and who buys them?, why do the contributors give up their time for small independent magazines – do they get something from this? and lastly how long did it take to put together – (last question from Chung).

For a far more detailed commentary on the night, check out Steve Watson’s site.

(Can’t quite work out at 3 in the morning if Steve Watson’s – Stack is the same as Monocle’s – The Stack..?)

Blok Knives

Blok Knives – saw them first in the Observer Food Magazine (Dec 2013) – look stunning. If you want beautifully handmade kitchen knives then look no further. I know very little about them other than they are made by Ben in Derbyshire! On twitter @blok_knives…(images from their site).

Certainly one for the wish list…

FHK Henrion

FHK Henrion – talk (held by/at the St Bride Foundation) 15 Jan 2014.

Words from St Bride: 2014 is the centenary of the birth of FHK Henrion, the most important British graphic designer of the twentieth century. Born in Germany, Henrion lived and worked in Britain from the 1930s until his death in 1990. During that time he worked as a celebrated poster artist, and later as one of the global pioneers of corporate identity. He was a product designer, educator and design evangelist, and no one did more to professionalise British graphic design at a time when it was still a cottage industry. Many of Henrion’s groundbreaking logos and identities remain in use today, amongst them Tate & Lyle, Blue Circle Cement and KLM.

Also a new Unit Editions book on FHK Henrion.
