User research in the discovery phase

Nice diagram showing the stages of user research through discovery, alpha and beta – (via Leisa Reichelt (gov.uk) – always insightful, and like the BBC happy to share ideas, approaches and best practice.

BBC iWonder

Seen via the printed pages of Creative Review – the BBC’s iWonder looks like it could become the one to watch as a benchmark of online learning. The CR blog describes it as ‘is a responsive platform that combines archive footage and original content to create immersive online learning resources.’

BBC iWonder

A great article by Rachael Steven in the March issue of CR is packed with so much information I have – as an aide memoir – shamelessly quoted below…

‘….a responsive system that can be easily adapted to produce guides for any subject…text, images, audio and video can be uploaded by editorial teams in a matter of minutes using a CMS…scripts and guides have been co-authored by presenters…

Seen more as an extension to the programme it has linked the show tone with the guides ‘…in the past, the BBC’s factual content has an encylopaedic tone but the guides are from a particular person’s perspective…we thought audiences might be drawn to that’.

The work itself… ‘adhers to BBC brand guidelines and reflects the key Knowledge and Learning values such as ‘enlightened’ and ‘brilliantly curious’ it has a ‘more light hearted feel’…Each guide will be designed to reflect the content, so the look and feel will be fluid – but each guide ‘will use the same layout, icons and headers…also with ‘a choice of eight to ten colour palettes’.

Dan Snow’s World War One

The article also references the New York Times Snow Fall creative – which from what I can gather is in essence an extended article – which has embedded films, animations, chapters – and creates a fully ‘immersive’ experience.

Dave Dye

As much as the endless blogs with ‘stuff’ – read nice images of new designs (this site included) – are great to source and view – blogs that offer insight and knowledge into the design arena are really a cut above. Johnson Banks and Love are fantastic (off the top of my head) and now adding Dave Dye to that. Having never really got into the advertising scene I have to admit I have not heard of him before –  found via @davetrott feed – this is a fantastic blog of a great creative ideas and features concepts, ideas, executions that he has produced over his career…

Stuff from the loft – Dave Dye – ‘Assorted ephemera from solving problems, creating stuff & making things.’

Dave Trott

Dave Trott (talks to Al Young)…new talk from the Typographic Circle.

Not too sure how I have not come across him or his work – but looking at the brief bio… ‘The legendary creative Dave Trott; the man responsible for some of the most memorable ads of the last 30 years is back by popular demand.’

Thursday 30 Jan – 7pm

Worth checking out his rather nicely worded blog posts that appear on the Campaign magazine website.

Handsome Frank

Handsome Frank is an illustrator agency – (which I stumbled across via The Guardian’s Spotter’s Guide to Buildings via Emma Kelly!).

A wide selection of illustrators – to be expected but they also have a nice blog of work that has been commissioned by the likes of Esquire, Wallpaper etc..etc…

Work featured is by Emma Kelly, David Sparshott and Thibaud Herem.

The School of Life

The School of Life – first up I absolutely love the look of their website. Really simple and calm but lovingly put together.

Essentially (in their words) a ‘cultural enterprise offering good ideas for everyday life’ which they do via talks, products, classes, books etc..etc.. More to follow when I have really had time to look through in more depth.

I mean who wouldn’t want a pencil sets with the words Bricolage or Anagnorisis? Pretentious, moi?!

(thanks to Roisin for the find)

Seymourpowell work for Nokia – working with DesignStudio. Couple of films exploring ‘everyday adventure’ in San Francisco, Buenos Aires and LA – slightly fluffy films, but look fab and have a great feel to them – check the link to find out a little more. Also a little bonus finding that Seymourpowell have a blog.

Home & Delicious

Gunnar Sverrisson and Halla Bára Gestsdóttir – husband and wife team from Iceland… nice blog site but also a lovely online magazine

In their words…

home & delicious – is a place for our thoughts, work and interests. The home and food, our environment and the nature; how we think about it and treat it means a lot to us. Our site is a place for people to seek inspiration and get useful ideas for their home and living. To create interesting and personal space around you where cooking food and eating is an integral part of the whole.
