FHK Henrion

FHK Henrion – talk (held by/at the St Bride Foundation) 15 Jan 2014.

Words from St Bride: 2014 is the centenary of the birth of FHK Henrion, the most important British graphic designer of the twentieth century. Born in Germany, Henrion lived and worked in Britain from the 1930s until his death in 1990. During that time he worked as a celebrated poster artist, and later as one of the global pioneers of corporate identity. He was a product designer, educator and design evangelist, and no one did more to professionalise British graphic design at a time when it was still a cottage industry. Many of Henrion’s groundbreaking logos and identities remain in use today, amongst them Tate & Lyle, Blue Circle Cement and KLM.

Also a new Unit Editions book on FHK Henrion.

Designing News – Francesco Franchi

Designing News by Francesco Franchi – ‘In Designing News, award-winning editorial and infographics designer Francesco Franchi conveys his vision for the future of the news and media industries. He evaluates the fundamental changes that are taking place in our digital age in terms of consumer expectations and the way media is being used. The book then outlines the challenges that result and proposes strategies for traditional publishing houses, broadcasting companies, journalists, and designers to address them.’

Looks absolutely amazing. Published by Gestalten – yours for £45…seen via @MrMattWilleybook_featured_6

Conor Harrington

Stumbled across this ‘little’ surprise created by Conor Harrrington (his twitter feed is more up-to-date) the other week – a giant mural that formed part of the Dulwich festival – unsure how long these are up for – but a fantastic find and an awesome, impressive piece of street art.

Hooked blog on the web has a more indepth feature – film created by Spraying Bricks

This epic struggle is played out across the world! More of the Fight Club in San Juan – Puerto Rico. Love the idea of these characters existing with a story to tell…via Street Art News

London Design Festival 2013 – Pentagram

Design is Everywhere was the theme for the LDF this year. Now all packed up for another year – the ident from Pentagram (Dominic Lippa) again is striking and bold. It is nice to see a campaign idea worked across the various applications in a thoughtful way.

Images from Pentagram.

Nike – W+K Amsterdam

Human Printing Press for Nike by Wieden and Kennedy Amsterdam. Elaborate, creative but compared to other W+K/Nike work – I am not too sure.

‘The idea behind the ad ‘The strategy behind the film is ambitious: a desire to inspire Turkish sports fans not just to watch their favourite sports on TV but actually get out and participate themselves. To do this, the agency turned to a number of Turkish sports stars, including footballers Burak Yilmaz and Enes Ünal, to use their skills to help create an unusual poster for fans.’

‘The machines in the film took around three weeks to create, and then the whole thing was shot over two days in a massive warehouse outside Istanbul.’

Seen via @stbridelibraryCreative Review’s Ad of the week have an interview with the creatives behind the campaign – words and imagery CR.

Nike – W+K

YESTERDAY YOU SAID TOMORROW – a random find on the web – really simple ad for Nike by Wieden and Kennedy (presumably the New York office) from a few years ago I believe. No glitz, no glamour – just straight-talking…
