i-D covers 93-94

I am spotting a theme here – i-D is 35 so every post of theirs has 35 things – best of etc..

Getting past that – here are 3 awesome front covers from 93-94. I have looked but I cannot work out who the art-director/creative director was for these covers – but they really are amazing – 20 years old but far more interesting than the 35 model concept they have chosen to run with for the current edition.

Printout – Designing difference

First time that I have made it to a Printout event. What a great hour / hour and an half – organised and hosted by Jeremy Leslie (MagCulture) and Steve Watson (Stack). 3 interesting magazines given a showcase by their designers – (Winter / A magazine for all seasons, Talc and mono-cultur). Printout events (I think) focus just on magazines but any designer or non-designer, in any field, (basically everyone) for that matter should check these events out. Just £6.

My preference in terms of subject and design would be Winter (designed/created by Ana Lessing and Kevin Braddock) and mono-cultur (designed/created by Kai van Rabenau). Certainly will be making a trip to Magma (if they stock them) to get myself a copy.

Some poor questions from the audience (either too long winded/self-important or just plain drunk!) – ended the night – questions that I have thought of since – how far from the initial designs, layout is the finished product?, who is the audience for these magazines and who buys them?, why do the contributors give up their time for small independent magazines – do they get something from this? and lastly how long did it take to put together – (last question from Chung).

For a far more detailed commentary on the night, check out Steve Watson’s site.

(Can’t quite work out at 3 in the morning if Steve Watson’s – Stack is the same as Monocle’s – The Stack..?)

The Church of London

Been aware of The Church of London for a while – still own their Attack the Block issue from Mar ’11 – but just to remind myself of them and the really exciting design work they do with the magazine/publishing arena..

The work for Little White Lies (which is consistently great), Huck and Dainese Legends (only seen on screen) is worth checking out…LWL concept each issue is based upon the feature film (images below from TCOL). A selection of their work…

They also host events in their studio – 71a Leonard St

Home & Delicious

Gunnar Sverrisson and Halla Bára Gestsdóttir – husband and wife team from Iceland… nice blog site but also a lovely online magazine

In their words…

home & delicious – is a place for our thoughts, work and interests. The home and food, our environment and the nature; how we think about it and treat it means a lot to us. Our site is a place for people to seek inspiration and get useful ideas for their home and living. To create interesting and personal space around you where cooking food and eating is an integral part of the whole.

Port magazine

Port magazine launching spring – “The new intelligent style magazine for men”

“Editor Dan Crowe and creative directors Kuchar Swara and Matt Willey have created a very modern magazine but one that is clearly positioned within their collective understanding of the history of magazines. This is no surprise – Crowe has form as editor of the creatively successful literary magazine Zembla; Willey designed that title while working at Frost Design; and Swara has worked at Esterson Associates and been part of Tyler Brulé’s Winkreative team, where he helped relaunch Italian interiors title Casa Da Abitare. This is a team with an interest in well-crafted editorial communication.

Seen first via magculture retweeted and blogged the world over I am quite sure.
