Solid Steel Radio

Simple way of using a lead image for promotion/branding on Twitter and on their website by Solid Steel Radio. (Website however is really tricky to navigate around on a laptop – presume it is designed for touch screens?) – For those wanting to hear the sounds of Avalon Emerson check out her Soundcloud page.

Rough Trade vs Solid Steel Radio

A few twitter ads for @RoughTrade and @SolidSteelRadio twitter promotion posts over the last bit of time – a little bit of transparent colour overlay – simple, styled…

Ordnance Survey

Although these are a little low quality – Ordnance Survey maps always beautiful. Have to admit I know absolutely nothing about the process of how these are created…hmmm..

Dan Kitchener

Took this photo on my travels when walking through the badlands of Bedminister (Bristol) on a Sunday morning a few months back… proper street-artistry from Dan Kitchener…there is something to be said for street-art – it can surprise and blow you away whilst you are doing something mundane like going to the shops…

i-D covers 93-94

I am spotting a theme here – i-D is 35 so every post of theirs has 35 things – best of etc..

Getting past that – here are 3 awesome front covers from 93-94. I have looked but I cannot work out who the art-director/creative director was for these covers – but they really are amazing – 20 years old but far more interesting than the 35 model concept they have chosen to run with for the current edition.

i-D is 35

i-D is 35 years old! I can’t remember how long it took me to realise the connection of the front cover feature image and the masthead – too long. Here are a few of portraits from i-D’s 35 feature of profiles of actors, models before they were famous (although not really strictly true). Some of the portraits are a little meh – but these are the best. Robert Clayton

As a break to UX based posts – here is some work from Robert Clayton (via i-D magazine) – photographs from 1991 of the Lion Farm estate. Nice article by Nathalie Olah  (on their site) to support these photographs. A book of this work Estate: Robert Clayton with essays from Jonathan Meades (surely worth the price alone for his writing!) and Laura Noble. untitled-article-1432827592 untitled-article-1432827592-body-image-1432830800 estate-post-industrial-ruin-at-the-end-of-thatchers-britain-body-image-1432904005

Personas

A little more reference on the purpose, approach and execution of this tool. From the BBC Internet Blog – Refreshing BBC Sport User Personas (by Christine Charnock) – from Christof Zurn a persona poster template (licensed under CreativeCommons) – and from a link from the BBC a couple of posts from Smashing Magazine (by Shlomo Goltz) – part 1 and part 2. Additionally on these posts are a great range of further resources and reference. Lots to read!

User research in the discovery phase

Nice diagram showing the stages of user research through discovery, alpha and beta – (via Leisa Reichelt (gov.uk) – always insightful, and like the BBC happy to share ideas, approaches and best practice.
