Fitzhugh and Linsay of the Brooklyn Home Co

Stumbled across Design Sponge sometime last year – a wonderful site. These photos are part of their “sneak peak” pages where they interview and go behind the scenes of designers worldwide. The home I have selected is by Fitzhugh Karol and Linsay Caleo of The Brooklyn Home Co – (I still have a the kitchen shot with the dog Olive as my desktop at work). Possibly the best part is that most of the furniture has been made and crafted by this couple.

Shit London – Patrick Dalton

Featured in this Saturday’s Guardian weekend magazine 02.07.11 – capturing London in its most raw. The images that the Guardian selected are great (which I have not been able to find from his site) so I have selected a few myself.

“These are photographs of the unintentional human comedy that surround us in the city. It’s the flotsam and jetsam of city life , the overlooked minutiae , the tragic , the grotesque and the basest of base. It’s the adapted posters , the dirty joke on the back of a van , the mispelt signs , the glory hole in the public loo , that weird shop down the end of your road and the knob graffiti strategically placed for maximum effect.” Words and pics from Shit London/Patrick Dalton.

Also has a book of that is published by Portico on 7 July – you can get a copy here. (Launch night is on the same eve 6-9pm at The Mill Co Project, Vyner Street E2 9DJ.)

Mélanie Kimmett – 1

A bit of a love in of Melanie Kimmett’s portfolio and blog. I discovered her site yesterday, checked out some of it today and am so impressed with the content of the blog and the fantastic work she does. Melanie is a designer and illustrator based in Vancouver “specialized in conceptualizing identity + brand design, print publication and illustration”. The work that she (and her team) worked on for the Vancouver Olympics is fab – in particular the AMAZING mascots that she was involved with – “from colour/fabric selection, approval of shape and form as well as calculating and producing 3D sewing patterns to ensure the placement of specific characteristics matched the 2D drawings”. I actually wanted these (and still do)!! Words and pics via her site. This will be the first of many posts…!

Geekhearts a day – Rebekah Lock

Awesome daily online sketch book by my mate Becky. She has set herself the challenge of creating a heart shaped ‘design’ every day for 2011. Each heart that is created has a lovely story with it. Check it out here.

pia jane bijkerk – blog

Fantastic blog of Pia Jane Bijkerk – if you want to see lovely work and photographs. In Pia’s own words she is “an internationally acclaimed stylist, photographer and author specializing in interiors, still life & food. She continues to use her home as her workshop and her travels as inspiration and delights in stepping off the beaten path to discover the unexpected for her clients and readers…and divides her time working and living between Sydney, Parisand a houseboat in Amsterdam.”

To give a flavour of her and her work I have selected at random a post that looks great of window displays + installations that  she worked on. Windows featured are: Better Read Than Dead + Newspaper Taxi (in Brisbane, I think), Shearers (in Leichhardt). (Have taken all the work pics out of context, which I hate to do…but if you want to read more check out the link here).

Like the pics of the work as much as the work itself…Words and images from Pia’s site.

Birdwatching

Can’t quite remember how I stumbled across this site – but anyway – awesome work on a blog called Birdwatching.

“Our common aim is to connect, support and promote female graphic designers everywhere. We do this through concrete actions such as initiating dialogue, curating showcases and arranging participatory activities.”

More to follow in the coming weeks.
